Inside the Master Theory Academy

RCM Levels 5 - Level 8

Instructions begin with a solid understanding and knowledge of application with RCM Level 5 Theory, before progressing through Levels 6-8 (and beyond, if appropriate).

Here’s why it matters:

  • A cumulative theory foundation: Students develop a strong, structured understanding of music theory that serves as the essential groundwork for RCM Levels 6-8, and continues to support advanced study through Levels 9-10.

  • The ability to apply theory in real music: Students learn how to use theory — not just recognize it on paper. Concepts strengthen musical understanding, interpretation, and performance.

  • Fluency with formal RCM exam formats: Through guided exposure to authentic exam-style materials and questions, students become familiar with how theory is tested, common expectations, and recurring exam questions to reduce student uncertainty and improve exam readiness.

Rates vary by level and lesson type. Please get in touch for current pricing.

Hear from Parents and Students

It was a great environment! Kristie's very encouraging, and I felt that it was a great setting to learn and improve. I'd say to go for it! As long as you're truly passionate about pursuing music or learning theory, then learning with Kristie would be a great option :).”

— Eric (student)

I recommend Kristie to students who want to learn music theory and love music. Kristie teaches with her heart. She doesn’t mind spending the extra effort as long as the student is willing to do their part. Music theory is not easy. The student must be willing to put in hard work themselves to succeed.

— J (parent)

“Kristie is very considerate and understanding. She cares a lot about her students and always tries to set them up for success. I always feel comfortable talking to her and asking her questions. Not only is she able to answer questions I have regarding theory in depth, and using languages that help me understand better, she’s also able to give really good advice about challenges outside of music theory (such as academic advice and how to deal with stress).

— Nerine (student) Graduated Levels 5-8 Theory and Level 9, achieving First Class Honours with Distinction

“Thanks for teaching me so much theory. It helped me a lot in band and violin. You’re so nice and amazing.”

— Alycia (student) Level 5 theory student

I’m truly grateful to have Kristie as my theory teacher. I don’t think it would have been possible to do the exam without her patience and effort.

— Kristen (student) Graduated Level 5-8 Theory student, achieving First Class Honours

My son is very lucky to learn his theory lesson with Kristie. She is a very easy-going and well-organized teacher. Thank you for putting so much effort into his lessons and detailed emails. I really appreciate it.

FAQ

Everything you need to know about online music theory lessons

  • Yes. Starting at RCM Level 5, theory examinations are required alongside practical exams for all instruments - including piano, guitar, voice, violin, and more. If your child studies any instrument under the Royal Conservatory of Music, theory is part of their certification path.

These requirements ensure that students develop musical literacy, not just performance ability.

    Theory study supports:

    • A strong understanding of how music works

    • Consistent academic discipline and long-term goal setting

    • Readiness for higher-level study and post-secondary programs

    • Confidence and independence as a musician

Students who understand theory learn more efficiently, retain material longer, and perform with greater clarity and intention.

  • Students are responsible for purchasing their own copy of the official RCM Theory book for the level they are studying. I will let you know exactly which book to purchase before lessons begin.

To ensure lessons run smoothly, students should join lessons using a desktop, laptop, or iPad. A desktop or laptop is preferred. Phones are not suitable for lessons because the screen is too small to clearly view music, exercises, and shared materials. Cameras must remain on during lessons so we can communicate clearly and review work together.

Students should also have a pencil, eraser, and a notebook for taking notes. Access to a printer or the ability to view and annotate PDFs may also be helpful for worksheets and assignments.

Finally, students should be set up in a quiet workspace where they can focus without distractions during the lesson.

  • Official RCM music theory exams begin at Level 5. The appropriate exam for a student depends on what they’ve already learned, their musical goals, and the level of instrument they’re currently studying.

If you’re unsure which theory level should take or how best to prepare, I’d be happy to help.

  • Every student is different and learns at their own pace. Before enrolling in Level 5, students must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic musical theory. Students will not be enrolled in official exams unless they’ve completed mock exams and have shown exam readiness. Exam enrolment and readiness are determined by the teacher.

  • Music theory lessons are taught online through Google Meets with online worksheets and interactive tools to keep learning engaging. Students must have their own copy of the RCM Theory book. Students who are enrolled in private piano lessons may inquire about in-person music theory lessons.

  • If a student arrives late, the lesson will still end at the originally scheduled time so that the schedule remains fair to all students. If you anticipate being late, please send a quick message in advance.

Students are always encouraged to arrive on time to make the most of their lesson time.
